Pretty good price for a MakerBot - they were actually a bit more just some months ago.

Oh m sure it's a good price for the tech, it was just funny seeing the Only tag next to the price.

Want so bad. Actually, I wonder.... Would anyone be interested in Oppo keychains and such? Not sure what the price would be, but if one of us (preferably me, because my idea so yeah) made and sold them like the decals, it could make one of these much more affordable. Do you know what its maximum dimensions are? I assume a Jalopnik license plate frame would be too big, but that could sell well, too. But yeah, assuming we got permission to sell things like that, it could be pretty fun.

2199 for anything you want ? sounds like a deal to me ... wonder how well this thing could make shift knobs , trim pieces , and maybe turbos ?

Maximum build volume is 410 cubic inches as listed by the price.

I think it only accepts plastic as a substrate.

It only creates things in plastic, so turbos are out, shift knobs and trim pieces are definitely possible though.

Considered something like this. the size limitation is what would stop me.

as long as you want plastic ): .... Wack .. I'd take a plastic gun tho

I said possible, not advisable. That said, interior trim pieces on most cars are plastic so it wouldn't be that much different.

it looks small, why would they make such a small one?? O.o

Anybody know how sturdy the printed material is nowadays? I worked at a place that made a bunch of rapid prototype stuff out of SLA and SLS and it was pretty delicate. Thin parts were easy to snap in your hands and if the parts got fairly heavy they would shatter into a few large pieces if dropped. Also if left in direct sunlight or exposed to heat they would deform. It was good for mocking up stuff, gluing, drilling, sanding, painting, but not for any kind of finished product.

Kinja'd!!!1

Keep in mind the plastic used is typically not strong at all. It also depends on the type of printer

You'd probably have to get a laser cutter to make anything that would stand up to the daily abuse of a keychain. The plastic used in these printers is extremely delicate

Kinja'd!!!3

Very true, typically it's ABS plastic along with some sort of dissolvable suspension medium used for blank space and to keep multiple parts seperate. That said, there are also ones that use a ceramic powder, such as those used by Laika to make the puppet faces on Paranorman, and there are supposedly ones that use metal in the works as well (via additive methods, not subtractive ones like CNC and milling machines.

It was some sort of plastic sold in spools. Can't really comment on how durable it's supposed to be.

I do 3d modeling and animation for a living, staying up on tech related to it is part of my job. :D

Kinja'd!!!0

I do 3D modeling for 60% of my day, so I know a bit about it but not a ton. My boss said we have a 3D printer in our budget for 2014 so I'm hoping to expand my knowledge substantially

Very cool! We unfortunately do not have it in our budget currently, though that is because it'd be insane to try and build a full model of a rig including all the equipment. Thus we are sticking with animations, though I may get to play with some VR/AR stuff this year.

Most hobby prototyping isn't any bigger than will fit in a 6" cube, and the larger it gets, the more prohibitively expensive the linear motion actuators it has to have. It's quite expensive to maintain 1/32" or less precision over, say, a 3' working distance: it's much easier to build and control within tolerance at less than 1'.

There's also the part where you'd have to build it to store enough working plastic for a larger piece to not have to refill 80 times...

It prints in PLA. The parts that come off of it aren't brittle. In fact, for a major kickstarter campaign we printed keychains using ABS plastic and the one I carry with me has lasted 3years.

Kinja'd!!! rabbit > Stupidru
01/13/2014 at 16:24

These printers use PLA/ABS and depending upon layer height & overall height, the prints are actually really strong.

It doesn't give specific dimensions, though? For all I know that could be 820x1x0.5 or something stupid. I'm sure it's not, but you know.

Ooooh I just looked it up. PLA is that stuff they make biodegradable plastic cups out of. Methinks I need a machine of my own.

Yep, you can print stainless steel now, it uses bronze to bond together.

Yea, it's pretty trippy. The printers are really fun to play with. I've got a mini bot farm going over here. Sadly, I haven't had anything I needed prototyped. :/
